The path down to Praia de Encantadas follows a groove worn into the hillside, switchbacking through coastal scrub that smells of resin and sea spray. When you emerge onto the narrow strand, the cliff face rises behind you in layers of dark basalt, streaked with orange lichen and the white tracings of mineral deposits. The beach itself is little more than a shelf of exposed rock at high tide, widening to reveal pockets of coarse sand when the water pulls back.

You stand where land ends abruptly, the ocean spreading out in shades of slate and teal depending on the depth. Small waves break against the stone platform beneath your feet, sending up plumes of mist that catch the afternoon light. Tidal pools form in the depressions, warming in the sun and hosting tiny crabs that skitter sideways when your shadow passes over them.
As evening approaches, the sky begins its slow burn through peach and violet, the sun sinking toward the water in a display that draws the few other visitors into silence. The cliffs frame the scene on either side, their dark forms silhouetted against the glowing sky. You watch the colors deepen, the warmth on your skin gradually replaced by the cooler air rolling in off the Atlantic.
