Counting the waves…
Counting the waves…

You'll smell Igrane before you see it clearly—fish scales and seawater mixing with wild rosemary from the hillsides, overlaid with grilling meat from konobas preparing lunch service. The beach curves around both sides of the small harbor, pebbles polished smooth by decades of footsteps and wave action. On the northern stretch, several concrete platforms extend into deeper water, claimed by morning swimmers who dive off the edges in practiced arcs. The village itself climbs the slope behind the beach in tight terraces, stone houses with red tile roofs and gardens planted with figs and olive trees. You can walk from one end of the waterfront to the other in ten minutes, passing the harbor where fishermen mend nets and locals gather for morning coffee at the two cafés overlooking the boats. The water here shows the characteristic Dalmatian clarity—you can count pebbles on the bottom three meters down, watch small fish dart between submerged rocks. By afternoon, families occupy the shaded spots near the promenade while tourists rent loungers on the open shore. The Biokovo massif rises so steeply to the east that the village falls into mountain shadow by late afternoon, even in midsummer. This early shade brings relief from the heat but sends sun-seekers packing earlier than at beaches with western exposure. Evening transforms the harbor into the village's social center, with children cycling along the waterfront and adults lingering over iced rakija at outdoor tables.
