Counting the waves…
Counting the waves…
You arrange your towel on pebbles that range from egg-smooth to palm-sized, their heat radiating through fabric as you claim your patch of shoreline. Behind you, the Biokovo massif rises with startling abruptness, its limestone faces climbing nearly five thousand feet in less than three miles. The mountain's shadow advances across the beach by mid-afternoon, a relief from the relentless sun, and you watch the boundary between light and shade creep toward the water's edge. Families cluster near the shallow entry points where children can wade safely, while swimmers stroke outward with purpose, heading for the deeper blue beyond the pebbled shallows. The water temperature surprises you—warmer than beaches just north, thanks to the cove's protected aspect and the way currents eddy in the mountain's lee. You wade in slowly, pebbles rolling beneath your soles until the bottom drops away and you're floating. The view from water level reverses perspective: now the beach rises to meet vertical rock, promenade palms tiny against the massif's bulk. A ferry cuts across the channel between mainland and Hvar, its wake reaching shore minutes later in gentle swells that lift and lower you rhythmically. You emerge as the sun dips behind Biokovo's ridge, triggering a sudden coolness. The stones underfoot have shed their heat, and vendors along the promenade begin shuttering their stalls. You towel off feeling the satisfying exhaustion of a day spent swimming, lounging, and reading under gradually shifting shade, your skin tight with salt and sun.

Podgora Beach is very safe and family-friendly, known for particularly calm swimming conditions. The pebble beach shelves gently into clear, clean waters, creating shallow areas suitable for children. The bay's natural protection means waves and currents are typically minimal, making it one of the calmest spots on the Makarska Riviera. Lifeguard services operate during summer peak season, and the beach is well-maintained. Water quality is consistently excellent. Pebbles can be smooth but sometimes uncomfortable, so water shoes are helpful. The central location means help and facilities are always nearby.
Podgora Beach is best visited between June and September when weather is reliably warm and sunny. Peak season in July and August offers warmest sea temperatures (24-26°C) and full facility operation, but also brings the highest crowds and prices. June and September are often ideal, providing excellent swimming conditions with fewer tourists and better value accommodation. September benefits from warm seas accumulated over summer. The shoulder months of May and October can be pleasant but cooler, with reduced services and some facilities closed. For optimal balance of weather and tranquility, early June or September are recommended.
Podgora sits along the D8 coastal highway, approximately 100km south of Split and 120km north of Dubrovnik. From Split, drive south on the scenic coastal road (about 1.5-2 hours) or take one of the frequent daily buses from Split's main bus station. From Dubrovnik, head north on the same coastal route (approximately 2-2.5 hours by car or bus). Regular bus connections also link Podgora with Makarska and other Riviera towns. The beach is in the town center, easily walkable from most accommodations. Paid parking is available near the beach during summer season.
Podgora offers varied accommodation from waterfront hotels and family-run pensions to private apartments and villas throughout the town. Options range from budget-friendly to mid-range, with the beachfront promenade hosting several hotels with sea views. Numerous restaurants line the waterfront serving fresh Adriatic seafood, Croatian specialties, and international dishes. You'll find beach bars, cafes, pizzerias, and traditional konobas. Supermarkets, bakeries, and a local market provide self-catering supplies. The town is a full-service resort community, though somewhat quieter than Makarska. Summer bookings should be made well in advance.
