Counting the waves…
Counting the waves…

The beach runs for nearly a kilometer, wide enough in most sections that even in peak August you can find space to spread a towel without brushing elbows with neighbors. The entry is famously gentle—walk thirty, forty meters from shore and the water still barely reaches your waist, the seabed flat and even underfoot. Parents cluster in these shallows, their toddlers splashing in water that's sun-warmed and safe, while stronger swimmers head to the concrete pier at the northern end where the depth increases abruptly. Behind the beach, a row of cafés and rental operations offer umbrellas, loungers, and the kind of tourist infrastructure that marks Zaostrog as a proper family resort rather than a sleepy village. But the development feels measured, stopping short of the sprawl you'll find further north. Pine trees provide intermittent shade, and a paved walking path runs the length of the waterfront, popular with evening strollers once the sun drops behind the Biokovo ridge. The water quality is excellent—clean enough that you can see your feet clearly even waist-deep, with none of the turbidity that sometimes plagues busier beaches after storms. Small fish occasionally brush past your legs. Across the channel, Pelješac's southern coast shimmers in the heat, and in the distance, the peaks of Hvar rise from the horizon like a mirage.

Zaostrog Beach is excellent for families with young children due to its shallow entry and calm waters. The pebble beach slopes gradually into the sea, allowing children to wade and play safely close to shore. The long stretch of beach provides plenty of space, and the village setting means lifeguards and facilities are typically available during peak season. As always, supervise children near water. The protected location along the Makarska Riviera ensures generally calm conditions, though occasional afternoon breezes can create small waves.
Visit Zaostrog Beach between June and September for optimal weather and warm sea temperatures. July and August offer peak conditions but attract the most visitors, especially families during school holidays. June and September provide excellent alternatives with pleasant weather, warm-enough water, and fewer crowds. The shoulder months also offer better value for accommodation. Avoid the off-season (October through May) when most facilities close and weather becomes unpredictable for beach activities.
