Strong currents are rare, but always check current conditions and avoid swimming during storms or high winds.
The optimal time to visit Playa Norte is during Cuba's dry season from November through April, when you'll enjoy excellent weather with minimal rainfall, comfortable temperatures, and calm seas perfect for swimming and snorkeling. This period offers the best visibility for underwater activities. Despite being peak season, Cayo Levisa remains relatively uncrowded compared to major resort areas. For the absolute quietest experience, visit during weekdays in November or April. Avoid the rainy season from May through October and especially hurricane season from June to November when weather can be unpredictable and seas rougher.
To reach Playa Norte, you must first travel to Palma Rubia ferry terminal, approximately 18 kilometers north of La Palma town in Pinar del Río Province. From Havana, this drive takes about 2.5-3 hours. At Palma Rubia, board the ferry to Cayo Levisa, which typically operates twice daily and takes approximately 30 minutes. The ferry schedule is usually morning and afternoon departures. Playa Norte is the main beach where the ferry docks and the resort is located, so no additional transport is needed once you arrive on the island. Book ferry times in advance through your accommodation.
Playa Norte is home to Cayo Levisa's main resort hotel, which offers all-inclusive packages with accommodation and meals. The resort features a restaurant serving Cuban and international cuisine, and a beach bar for drinks and snacks during the day. Most visitors book packages that include meals, as independent dining options on this small island are very limited. Day-trippers can sometimes purchase meals at the resort or should bring their own provisions. The resort offers simple but comfortable rooms with beach access. For alternative accommodations, you'll need to stay on the mainland and visit as a day trip.
