Counting the waves…

Plage de l'Écluse curves beneath Dinard's most photogenic real estate—grand villas with pepper-pot towers and candy-striped awnings that have drawn holidaymakers since the 1850s. You walk onto sand that shifts from tawny gold near the seawall to damp bronze at the water's edge, where the twice-daily tides can retreat half a kilometre, leaving tidal pools stippled with periwinkles and bladderwrack. Families stake territory with the beach's signature blue-and-white striped tents, a tradition older than most of the bathers using them. The promenade du Clair de Lune runs along the eastern flank, its palms and tamarisks groomed to withstand Atlantic gales. You smell salt and iodine, occasionally cut by the buttery aroma from a nearby galette stand. At low tide, the exposed sand becomes a playground for kite-flyers and barefoot joggers; at high tide, the water laps against the stone steps, and swimmers bob in the protected bay. Across the estuary, Saint-Malo's ramparts rise like a stage set, close enough to pick out individual towers. Sunset here pulls everyone to the western rocks, where the sky over the Rance estuary bleeds through shades of apricot and violet. You watch sailboats tack homeward, their masts catching the last light, while gulls settle onto mooring buoys. The beach empties slowly, leaving footprints that the tide will erase by morning.

Plage de l'Écluse is generally safe for swimming and very family-friendly. The beach is sheltered within a bay, creating calmer waters compared to open Atlantic beaches. Lifeguards patrol during summer months (typically June-September). The gently sloping sand makes it ideal for children to paddle safely. However, always check tide times and local warnings, as tidal ranges in Brittany can be significant. The beach features a natural seawater swimming pool that's perfect for kids. Facilities including showers, toilets, and beach clubs add to its family appeal.
Plage de l'Écluse can be enjoyed year-round, but offers different experiences by season. July and August bring warm weather (18-22°C) and full amenities, though crowds peak then. June and September offer pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors—ideal for a quieter beach experience. The beach faces west, making it exceptional for sunset viewing throughout the year. Spring and autumn are perfect for scenic walks along the promenade. Even winter attracts visitors for bracing seaside strolls and storm-watching. Water temperature is warmest August-September (16-18°C).
Plage de l'Écluse is centrally located in Dinard, easily accessible on foot from the town centre within 5-10 minutes. If driving, follow signs to 'Plage de l'Écluse' or 'Centre-Ville.' Several paid parking areas are nearby, including Boulevard Féart and around Place Rochaid, though spaces fill quickly in summer. The beach is about 15 minutes' walk from Dinard's bus station. From Saint-Malo, take the seasonal passenger ferry (10 minutes) or bus route 10. The nearest train station is Saint-Malo (6km away).
Plage de l'Écluse is surrounded by excellent dining and accommodation options. The beachfront promenade features numerous restaurants, crêperies, and cafés with sea views, ranging from casual to upscale. Ice cream stands and beach bars operate in summer. The iconic Grand Hôtel Barrière overlooks the beach, alongside other hotels and vacation rentals within walking distance. Beach amenities include showers, public toilets, beach club rentals (chairs, umbrellas), and seasonal lifeguard services. The town centre, just steps away, offers supermarkets, bakeries, and boutiques for all your beach day needs.
You cannot walk directly to Saint-Malo from Plage de l'Écluse, as the Rance Estuary separates the two towns. However, a seasonal passenger ferry service (typically April-September) operates between Dinard and Saint-Malo, departing near the beach—a scenic 10-minute crossing. Alternatively, you can enjoy a coastal walking path from Plage de l'Écluse along Dinard's other beaches and the Promenade du Clair de Lune, offering spectacular views across to Saint-Malo's walled city. By car, Saint-Malo is approximately 6km via the Rance Bridge.
