You arrive down a narrow road that dead-ends at dunes, the Atlantic grinding pebbles and shells into the beach while a lagoon spreads calm and bronze behind the barrier. This is the Vendée coast at its least manicured—no lifeguard towers, no snack bars, just sand ribbed by wind and tide. Gulls wheel overhead, and in migration season you spot avocets picking through shallows on stilt legs.

The beach runs in both directions farther than you can walk in an afternoon, backed by grasses that hiss in the constant offshore breeze. You swim where the ocean meets the strand, the water cool even in July, then cross the dunes to rinse in the lagoon's tepid shallows. Families let children wade in the lagoon while dogs chase tennis balls into the surf, unbothered by leash laws that don't apply here.
Sunset pulls every walker to the western edge, where the light turns the lagoon into hammered copper and the horizon swallows the sun without obstruction. You hear nothing but wind, waves, and the occasional bark echoing across the flats. By the time you return to your car, boot prints and paw prints already blur in the sand, erased as quickly as they were made.
