Lohme Beach hides below the tourist bustle, reached by a steep wooden staircase that switchbacks through beech roots and ferns. The shore is a thin crescent of egg-sized pebbles—grey, white, rust-streaked—flanked by fallen chalk slabs and the skeletal trunks of trees that tumbled from the cliff face. You pick your way across the stones, each step an ankle-test, to the waterline where the Baltic laps green and cold.

The cove is small, hemmed by wooded headlands. To the east, the cliffs of Jasmund rise in layered bands—chalk, clay, flint—stained ochre where rainwater seeps. The water deepens quickly; within ten strokes you're over your head, the bottom lost in murk. Couples spread towels on driftwood logs; a pair of kayakers beach their boats and stretch. The beach holds perhaps thirty people comfortably; arrive after 10 a.m. in summer and you'll share pebbles shoulder to shoulder.
By late afternoon, shadows creep across the cove as the sun drops behind the beech canopy. You climb the stairs slowly, thighs burning, pausing at the halfway landing to look back at the cove shrinking below. At the top, the village of Lohme feels landlocked again, all half-timbered calm, the sea already a memory.
