You'll find Meschendorf Beach by following the narrow lane past half-timbered farmhouses until the asphalt surrenders to sand. The beach unfolds in a quiet arc, its fine-grained shore interrupted by wooden breakwaters dark with age and barnacles. In the shallows, amber-colored stones catch the light, smoothed by centuries of wave action. Marram grass shivers atop the low dunes that separate beach from farmland.

The water here runs shallow for thirty meters out, warming faster than the open Baltic, turning the color of weak tea over the sandy bottom. Children wade out to their waists while still within calling distance. A few rope swings hang from the groynes, their knots swollen with salt. The beach lacks kiosks and rental stations—what you see are picnic blankets weighted down with shoes, thermoses of coffee, and paperback novels with sun-faded spines.
Local fishermen moor small boats just offshore, their nets laid out on the sand for mending. By late afternoon, the sun slants low across the water, turning the surface to hammered pewter and stretching the shadows of the groynes across the beach like the bars of a sundial. You'll share the sunset with perhaps a dozen others, most of them speaking Mecklenburgisch dialect, most of them here because their grandparents were here first.
