A small wooden pier extends into the Achterwasser, its planks bleached silver by seasons of sun. Local children jump from it repeatedly, their splashes the only disturbance on the glassy surface. You float on your back, the water temperature at least five degrees warmer than the Baltic just a few hundred meters away, and watch clouds drift east toward Poland.
