You round the headland and there it is, improbably turquoise against the chalky cliff face, a scoop of pebbles no wider than a tennis court. Spiaggia delle Bambole hides in plain sight along a coast lined with larger, louder beaches, its entrance marked only by a gap in the rocks that's easy to overshoot if you're not watching for it. The water in the shallows holds that particular shade of blue-green found where limestone sand meets sunlight, bright enough to seem artificial.

The pebbles are small and white, worn smooth by centuries of wave action, and they clatter softly as you walk across them. At the north end, a tumble of boulders creates pools where wrasse dart between sea urchins and anemones. The cliff behind rises seventy feet, its face pockmarked with cavities where rock doves nest, and wild fennel grows from every crack wide enough to hold soil. The scent—salt, stone, anise—is specific to this stretch of coast.
By noon the cove fills with light reflected off the water, doubling the intensity until you retreat to the narrow strip of shade at the cliff base. You share the beach with perhaps three other boats, their occupants silent in the heat. Underwater, visibility stretches thirty feet or more, the rocky bottom visible in precise detail. When the sun begins its descent behind the Aurunci peaks, the cliffs ignite, and the water darkens to sapphire, and you understand why people return year after year.
