Moon Beach, named for its distinctive crescent shape, offers a tranquil escape on Okinawa's main island. The gentle slope of the sand leads into shallow, placid waters, making it an ideal spot for families with young children or anyone seeking a peaceful dip in the East China Sea. Palm trees fringe the shoreline, providing pockets of shade from the Okinawan sun, while the soft lapping of waves creates a soothing soundtrack. Evenings here are particularly magical. As the sun begins its descent, the sky transforms into a canvas of oranges, purples, and deep blues, casting a warm glow across the entire bay. The calm surface of the water becomes a mirror, reflecting the vibrant spectacle above, inviting contemplation and quiet enjoyment. Beyond its natural beauty, Moon Beach offers convenient amenities, including a beach club that provides refreshments and activities. Whether you're building sandcastles, floating in the gentle surf, or simply watching the sunset paint the horizon, Moon Beach provides a quintessential Okinawan beach experience.

Moon Beach is excellent for families with children due to its calm, protected waters and crescent shape that naturally shields swimmers from strong currents. The beach typically has lifeguards during peak season and designated swimming areas with safety nets. The gradual slope and gentle waves make it ideal for young swimmers. However, always supervise children, check daily conditions, and swim within marked areas. Jellyfish can occasionally appear, particularly in summer months, so inquire locally about current conditions before entering the water.
Moon Beach can be visited year-round, but conditions vary seasonally. Late spring through early autumn (May-October) offers warm water temperatures ideal for swimming, though summer brings more crowds and occasional typhoons. Winter months (December-March) are cooler and quieter with fewer visitors, but water may be too cold for comfortable swimming. The shoulder seasons of April-May and September-October often provide the best balance of pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and good swimming conditions. Sunset viewing is spectacular throughout the year due to the beach's west-facing orientation.
Moon Beach is located approximately 50 kilometers north of Naha Airport in Onna Village. The most convenient option is renting a car, which takes about 60-75 minutes via the Okinawa Expressway. Take the expressway north to Ishikawa IC, then follow Route 58 north to Onna. Public transportation is limited but possible: take the airport limousine bus or local buses heading to central/northern Okinawa, though this requires transfers and takes considerably longer. Taxis are available but expensive for this distance. Many resort hotels offer airport shuttle services for guests.
Moon Beach is part of the Moon Beach Palace Hotel resort complex, which offers on-site accommodation ranging from standard rooms to suites. The resort features multiple restaurants serving Japanese, Western, and international cuisine, along with casual beachside dining options. Day visitors can access beach facilities for a fee and use resort restaurants. The surrounding Onna Village area has numerous additional hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants along Route 58. Convenience stores and local eateries are available within a short drive, making it easy to find various dining and lodging options to suit different budgets.
Moon Beach's distinctive crescent or half-moon shape creates a naturally sheltered cove that provides calmer water conditions compared to open coastline beaches. This curved formation protects swimmers from strong currents and larger waves, making it particularly suitable for families and less confident swimmers. The shape also creates a more intimate beach atmosphere despite its popularity. The protected bay results in clearer, more settled water ideal for snorkeling and viewing marine life. Additionally, the crescent orientation frames stunning sunset views over the East China Sea, with the curved shoreline providing excellent vantage points from multiple angles.
