Lowry Bay Beach occupies a sheltered stretch of Wellington Harbour's eastern shore, facing west toward the city skyline and the dark folds of the Rimutaka Range beyond. The sand here is coarse and grey, mixed with crushed shell and small stones worn smooth by harbour tides. At low tide, the shore extends in a broad flat scattered with driftwood and the occasional rusted fishing sinker.

The water enters in ankle-deep increments, warming slightly in the shallows on sunny days but keeping the harbour's characteristic chill once you wade deeper. You'll swim in murky green-brown water—plankton-rich and low on visibility—but the bottom is soft sand and the current negligible. Pohutukawa trees lean over the shore in places, their gnarled roots exposed where storms have clawed back the bank. A wooden pier extends from the beach's southern end, its barnacle-crusted pylons creaking with the tide.
On weekends, families arrive from the Hutt Valley suburbs with picnic coolers and folding chairs. Children dig in the damp sand near the water's edge, and someone's black Labrador fetches a tennis ball from the shallows. The beach has a neighbourhood feel: locals nod as they pass, regulars occupy the same spots. By evening the water turns pewter, reflecting the ridgeline's silhouette.
