Counting the waves…
Counting the waves…
The casuarina trees lean toward the water as if eager to touch it, their needle-like leaves whispering in the Gulf breeze. You wade into water so shallow and warm it feels like stepping into a bath drawn an hour ago, the sandy bottom unmarred except for the occasional hermit crab dragging its borrowed shell. Two small islands—Ko Fan Noi and Ko Fan Yai—punctuate the bay's mouth, their rocky silhouettes framing the horizon where fishing boats motor past in the early morning. Mid-morning brings families to the northern end, where the reef comes close enough to shore that you can snorkel without swimming beyond your depth. Sergeant majors and butterflyfish navigate the coral heads while you float above, the sun warming your back. The water here stays placid even when Chaweng, just a few kilometers south, sees whitecaps. By late afternoon, the beach vendors pack their carts of mango and sticky rice, and the few remaining visitors claim spots beneath the pines. The sand still holds the day's heat as the sun descends behind the island's interior hills, painting the shallow water in shades of copper and rose. A wooden longtail rocks gently at anchor, its painted hull bright against the darkening sea.

Choeng Mon Beach is generally very safe for swimming, making it an excellent choice for families with children. The beach features calm, shallow waters protected by a small headland, creating a natural lagoon effect with minimal waves. The gentle slope into the sea allows children to wade comfortably. During the dry season, water clarity is excellent and conditions remain tranquil. However, always supervise children near water, and be aware that jellyfish can occasionally appear during certain months, particularly between October and December.
The best time to visit Choeng Mon Beach is during Koh Samui's dry season from December to April, when you'll experience sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall. February and March offer the most consistent weather with lower humidity. The beach is also wonderful from late June to early September when conditions improve between monsoon periods. Avoid visiting during October and November when the northeast monsoon brings heavy rains and rough seas. Early mornings offer the most peaceful atmosphere regardless of season.
Choeng Mon Beach is conveniently located on Koh Samui's northeast coast, approximately 5 kilometers from Samui Airport, making it about a 10-15 minute drive. Taxis from the airport typically cost 300-400 baht. You can arrange hotel transfers in advance, use ride-hailing apps, or rent a scooter or car. From popular areas like Chaweng, it's a short 10-minute drive north. Songthaews (shared taxis) also service the route but may take longer with multiple stops. The beach is well-signposted from the main ring road.
Choeng Mon Beach offers diverse accommodation ranging from luxury resorts like Sala Samui and Melati Beach Resort to mid-range hotels and budget-friendly guesthouses. The area has several beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, Thai cuisine, and international dishes at moderate prices. You'll find casual beach bars, upscale resort dining, and local eateries within walking distance. While not as developed as Chaweng, there are convenience stores, massage shops, and cafes nearby. The Fisherman's Village in nearby Bophut offers additional dining options just a short drive away.
Choeng Mon Beach stands out for its crescent-shaped bay with exceptionally calm, shallow waters ideal for snorkeling and swimming. The beach maintains a peaceful, less commercialized atmosphere compared to busy Chaweng or Lamai beaches. Its unique feature includes views of the small island of Koh Fan Noi, which creates a picturesque setting. The beach combines tranquility with convenience, being close to the airport yet feeling secluded. The northern end offers better snorkeling around rocky outcrops, while the central area provides pristine white sand perfect for relaxation and Instagram-worthy photos.
