“You'll walk past the white-and-red tower that's guided freighters since 1851, its automated beam still sweeping across Cheboygan's rocky waterfront. Families stake out spots between the breakwater and the boat launch,…”

The beach at Lighthouse Beach Cheboygan unfolds along a curve of Lake Huron where smooth, water-worn stones replace the expected sand. Your feet adjust to the shifting cobbles as you make your way toward the active lighthouse—its squat tower and attached keeper's quarters painted in crisp red and white. The structure sits close enough that you can study the details of its iron gallery while you settle onto the shore. This isn't a place for long sunbathing sessions; the rocky terrain keeps most visitors moving, exploring the breakwater or watching sailboats tack toward the Cheboygan River channel.
The lake here changes personality with the seasons. In summer, you'll wade into surprisingly warm shallows where the stones massage your soles with each step. Come autumn, and waves throw spray high against the pier while oaks along Gordon Turner Park behind you blaze orange and crimson. Winter transforms the lighthouse into a frosted sculpture, ice forming fantastic shapes on every surface the spray can reach.

Lighthouse Beach offers relatively calm waters within Cheboygan's harbor area, making it generally suitable for swimming during summer months. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, so swim at your own risk. The beach has a gradual entry, which is family-friendly. Water temperatures in Lake Huron are typically comfortable from July through August. Always check weather conditions before entering the water, as Great Lakes conditions can change quickly. Avoid swimming during storms or high winds when waves and currents become unpredictable.
Summer months (June through August) offer the warmest weather and best swimming conditions, with temperatures reaching the 70s-80s°F. However, Lighthouse Beach is enjoyable year-round for different reasons. Fall brings stunning foliage and fewer crowds. Winter transforms the lighthouse into a dramatic ice-covered landmark, popular with photographers. Spring offers peaceful beach walks and bird watching. For traditional beach activities, plan your visit between late June and early September when water temperatures are most comfortable and amenities are fully operational.
Free public parking is available directly adjacent to Lighthouse Beach near the Cheboygan Crib Light at the end of Huron Street. The parking area is small but typically adequate except during peak summer weekends. Additional street parking can be found along nearby residential streets. The beach is located at the mouth of the Cheboygan River where it meets Lake Huron. From downtown Cheboygan, head north on Huron Street toward the water until you reach the beach area near the lighthouse.
Downtown Cheboygan is just a short walk or drive from Lighthouse Beach, offering various dining options including waterfront restaurants, cafes, and family eateries serving fresh Great Lakes fish and American cuisine. Accommodations range from budget motels to charming bed-and-breakfasts within a few miles of the beach. The beach itself has minimal amenities—no concessions or restrooms—so plan accordingly. Several hotels and motels line US-23 south of town. For supplies, grocery stores and convenience stores are available in downtown Cheboygan.
The distinctive Cheboygan Crib Light sits just offshore and is visible from Lighthouse Beach, making it a popular photography subject. This unique square lighthouse sits on a concrete crib foundation at the river's mouth. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be accessed directly, as it's surrounded by water. You can view it closely from the beach, breakwall, or boat. The lighthouse is particularly photogenic during golden hour and when ice formations develop in winter, attracting photographers from across the region.
