Headlands Main Beach unfolds at the foot of Mentor Headlands, where the glacial moraine rises abruptly from Lake Erie's southern shore. The sand here is finer than most Great Lakes beaches, compacted enough for barefoot volleyball games and toddler sandcastle kingdoms. Cottonwood and willow trees frame the parking area, their leaves shimmering silver-green in the persistent lake wind. On summer weekends, multigenerational families stake out picnic tables near the water, grills smoking with brats and corn, while swimmers wade into the lake's bathwater-warm shallows.

The headlands themselves—rugged sandstone bluffs rising fifty feet—anchor the eastern end of the beach, their layered strata worn smooth by millennia of wave action. You can scramble onto the lower rocks at low water, where shallow pools trap minnows and the occasional crayfish. Gulls wheel overhead, their cries mixing with the rhythmic slap of two-foot waves against the breakwall that shelters the western stretch of sand.
Come autumn, the crowds vanish but the beach remains open. The water takes on a steely grey-blue hue, and you might have the entire shoreline to yourself, save for the occasional beachcomber hunting for wave-tumbled glass. Even in winter, locals park and walk the frozen strand, watching ice floes jostle in the current.
