Most visitors prefer to wade in shallow water, beachcomb, or simply enjoy the scenery rather than swim. If you do enter the water, stay close to shore and never swim alone. Moonstone Beach is beautiful year-round, with each season offering unique appeal. Summer (June-August) provides warm weather and calm waters, though it's busiest then. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and excellent beachcombing after storms wash up moonstones and other treasures. Winter attracts photographers for dramatic wave action and solitude. Early morning visits any season provide the best light for photography and peaceful walks. Low tide is ideal for exploring tidal pools and finding the beach's namesake smooth stones.

Moonstone Beach has a small parking lot on Moonstone Beach Road off Route 1 in South Kingstown. Parking is limited with approximately 60 spaces, which fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays. Arrive early morning for best availability. From Route 1, turn onto Moonstone Beach Road and follow signs. There's also roadside parking along Moonstone Beach Road, but be mindful of posted restrictions. No parking fees are required. The beach entrance is a short walk from the lot.

Moonstone Beach itself has no facilities, restaurants, or services, so bring everything you need. However, nearby Matunuck (2 miles) offers dining options including seafood restaurants and the popular Ocean Mist Beach Bar & Grill. The village of Wakefield (4 miles) has more restaurants, groceries, and shops. For lodging, several vacation rentals and bed-and-breakfasts are available in the immediate area. More hotel options exist in Narragansett (7 miles) and Wakefield. Pack food, water, and supplies before visiting.

Moonstone Beach gets its name from the smooth, translucent pebbles found along its shore that resemble moonstones. These aren't actual moonstone gemstones, but rather milky quartz, feldspar, and other water-polished stones that glow when held to sunlight. Beachcombing, especially after storms or at low tide, often yields these beautiful stones. The beach is known for excellent rock collecting, and finding these treasures is a favorite activity.
