Counting the waves…
Geography makes Koserow. The beach sits where Usedom cinches to barely three hundred meters wide, pinched between the Baltic and the Achterwasser lagoon, with the Streckelsberg cliff providing vertical drama uncommon on this flat coastal island. The sand itself is fine and blonde, but you come here for the backdrop: forested bluff rising behind the beach, its face too steep for buildings, mantled in beech and pine that rustle in the offshore breeze. A wooden staircase climbs the cliff face, 58 meters of switchbacks and landings where you pause to catch your breath and take in the expanding view. At the summit, a platform looks north and south along the entire Usedom coastline, the beach a pale ribbon far below, the lagoon glinting inland. The beach at the base of the cliff stays cooler in the morning, shaded by the height, then floods with afternoon sun. Beach chairs cluster near the waterline, and families haul coolers and towels down the long approach from the parking area. The village of Koserow spreads on both sides of the island neck, with traditional thatched-roof houses and a tiny harbor on the lagoon side. A footpath traces the clifftop through the woods, emerging at viewpoints where benches face the sea. In autumn, the beech forest turns bronze, and the light through the canopy at sunset paints the white cliff face orange. The beach stretches empty then, and you can hear the surf from the clifftop trail.

Koserow Beach is family-friendly with generally safe swimming conditions and lifeguard supervision during the main summer season (June-August). The sandy beach slopes gradually into the Baltic Sea, suitable for children. However, the dramatic coastal scenery below Streckelsberg cliff means some areas have steeper approaches. Stick to designated swimming areas and follow lifeguard instructions. The beach can experience typical Baltic currents and variable weather, so always check daily conditions. The popularity and infrastructure of Koserow means better safety resources than more remote beaches, making it a solid choice for families.
July and August offer the warmest, most reliable weather at Koserow Beach, with temperatures often reaching 20-25°C and water temperatures of 17-20°C. June and September provide pleasant conditions with fewer crowds while maintaining reasonable beach weather. The Baltic coast can be unpredictable, so even summer visits may encounter cooler, windier days. Late spring (May) sees increasing sunshine but cooler water. For optimal swimming and sunbathing conditions combined with full beach services, aim for mid-June through late August when weather is warmest and all facilities operate fully.
Koserow is centrally located on Usedom Island along the B111 main road, easily accessible by car with several parking areas near the beach. The Usedomer Bäderbahn railway connects Koserow station to other island towns, offering convenient car-free travel. From Berlin, the drive takes approximately 3-3.5 hours via A11 and B109. Access Usedom Island via bridges at Wolgast or Anklam. From Koserow village center, the beach is a pleasant walk, including paths that lead down from the scenic Streckelsberg cliff offering panoramic views of the Baltic Sea.
Koserow, as a popular central Usedom resort, offers substantial accommodation options including hotels, guesthouses, holiday apartments, and campgrounds to suit various budgets. The village has numerous restaurants serving German regional cuisine, fresh Baltic seafood, and international dishes. Beach cafés and snack bars operate during summer. The longer promenade features ice cream shops and casual dining. Several bakeries and grocery stores support self-catering visitors. The tourism infrastructure is well-developed while maintaining village charm. Summer reservations are strongly recommended, especially for waterfront properties with Streckelsberg views.
The Streckelsberg is Usedom's highest coastal elevation, rising approximately 58 meters above the Baltic Sea and creating dramatic scenery unique among the island's generally flat beaches. Viewpoints atop the forested cliff offer panoramic vistas across the sea and coastline. Wooden stairways descend to the beach below, making an impressive approach. The cliff's presence creates varied landscapes combining forest, dune, and beach environments. This distinctive topography makes Koserow visually striking compared to other Usedom beaches and attracts visitors seeking both beach relaxation and scenic coastal hiking opportunities along clifftop trails.
