Counting the waves…

Soundside Park Beach occupies a slender ribbon of Surf City where Topsail Island narrows to a few hundred yards. You'll find families wading knee-deep a dozen yards from shore, toddlers chasing fiddler crabs in the shallows, and kayakers launching without fighting a single breaker. The beach itself is compact—more pocket park than sweeping shore—fringed by picnic tables under a canopy of salt-pruned oaks that rattle in the breeze. The Intracoastal Waterway stretches before you, a broad corridor of olive-green water stitched with crab-pot floats and the occasional shrimp trawler chugging toward Sneads Ferry. Herons stalk the mudflats at low tide. The horizon is mainland North Carolina: a low smudge of pine and marsh, not open sea. When nor'easters churn the Atlantic into froth, locals drive across the island to launch here, knowing the sound stays workable. You won't find concession stands or umbrella rentals. There's a small pavilion, a boat ramp, and a narrow swath of tan sand that transitions quickly to firm mud. Bring your own shade. The appeal is functional, not photogenic—this is where you come to actually get on the water, not pose beside it. At sunset, the light gilds the marsh grass copper, and the air smells of pluff mud and diesel, honest and unvarnished.

Soundside Park Beach is located on the Intracoastal Waterway rather than the ocean, offering calm, wave-free waters ideal for families with young children. The protected sound-side location means no strong currents or undertow, making it significantly safer than ocean beaches for swimming and wading. However, always supervise children near water. The gentle conditions also make it perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and learning water sports. Note that there are no lifeguards on duty, so swim at your own risk and exercise caution.
Soundside Park Beach is accessible year-round, with each season offering different advantages. Summer (June-August) provides warm water temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, perfect for swimming. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures for kayaking and beach activities. Winter can be mild enough for walks and birdwatching, though water activities are limited. Sunsets are spectacular year-round since the beach faces west across the sound. Visit on weekdays or early mornings during summer to avoid peak crowds.
Soundside Park Beach is located on the sound side of Surf City, accessible via NC Highway 50. From the main beach areas, cross back over the island toward the mainland side. The park has a small dedicated parking lot that accommodates approximately 20-30 vehicles. Parking is free but can fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays. Arrive early during peak season to secure a spot. The park is clearly marked with signage, and the entrance is easily accessible from the main road through Surf City.
Soundside Park Beach offers basic amenities including picnic tables, grills, and restroom facilities, making it suitable for day trips and family gatherings. There's a small playground for children. The beach doesn't have on-site food vendors, so bring your own snacks and drinks or pack a picnic. Nearby Surf City, just a few minutes away, has grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes where you can grab food before heading to the park. Several vacation rental properties and hotels are available throughout Surf City for overnight stays.
Unlike Surf City's Atlantic Ocean beaches, Soundside Park Beach sits on the calm Intracoastal Waterway, offering a completely different experience. The protected waters are shallow, waveless, and ideal for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and young children who might find ocean waves intimidating. The beach faces west, providing stunning sunset views over the water that ocean beaches can't offer. It's also significantly less crowded and more tranquil than ocean beaches. The sandy bottom and gentle entry make it perfect for wading and learning water sports in a relaxed environment.
