Counting the waves…
Counting the waves…

The turnoff sits just past the Crescent Head Holiday Park, easy to miss if you're scanning for billboards or tourist signage. You won't find either. Instead, a single-lane road dips through coastal scrub, and suddenly the beach opens wide—a long, scalloped bay bookended by headlands that shield it from the prevailing southerlies. The sand here has weight to it, packed firm enough that you can walk its full kilometre without sinking past your ankles. Mid-morning, you'll share the shore with retirees throwing tennis balls for border collies and the occasional van-lifer brewing coffee on a tailgate. The surf breaks gentler than its famous neighbour to the north, peeling across a shallow sandbar that shifts with each winter swell. Bring a longboard or a bodyboard; the waves here reward patience more than aggression. By late afternoon, the light turns gold and horizontal, setting the spinifex alight and casting long shadows from the pines. There's no cafe, no surf shop, no rack of rental umbrellas. Just a single weather-beaten picnic table under the trees and a dirt carpark that holds maybe twenty cars. The locals prefer it that way, and after an hour on the sand, so will you.

Goolawah Beach is generally suitable for experienced swimmers and surfers, but conditions vary. The beach is unpatrolled, so you swim at your own risk. Check surf reports before entering the water, as currents and wave conditions can change quickly. The southern end tends to be calmer for swimming, while the northern section attracts surfers seeking consistent breaks. Always assess conditions upon arrival, avoid swimming alone, and be mindful of rips. If you're unsure about ocean safety, consider visiting patrolled beaches like the main Crescent Head beach instead.
Goolawah Beach offers year-round appeal, though each season has advantages. Summer (December-February) provides warm weather ideal for swimming and sunbathing, but expect more visitors. Autumn and spring deliver pleasant temperatures with fewer crowds—perfect for long beach walks. Winter (June-August) attracts surfers seeking bigger swells and offers crisp, clear days, though water temperatures drop. The beach faces east, providing beautiful sunrise views any time of year. Mid-week visits generally ensure a quieter experience regardless of season, as this remains a relatively uncrowded spot compared to nearby beaches.
Goolawah Beach is located approximately 2 kilometres south of Crescent Head village. From Crescent Head, follow Pacific Street south; it becomes Goolawah Road leading toward the beach. Limited roadside parking is available near the beach access points—arrive early during weekends and holidays as spaces fill quickly. The beach requires a short walk from parking areas. A vehicle is recommended as public transport options to this quieter beach are limited. The unsealed access roads can become rough after heavy rain, so check conditions if driving a low-clearance vehicle.
Goolawah Beach has minimal on-site facilities—no cafes, shops, or restrooms directly at the beach. Pack all supplies, food, and drinking water before arriving. For amenities, head to nearby Crescent Head (2km north), which offers cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, and public toilets. Accommodation options concentrate in Crescent Head, including holiday parks, motels, and rental homes. Some visitors prefer the quiet, undeveloped nature of Goolawah for picnics and day trips while basing themselves in Crescent Head. Remember to take all rubbish with you as bins are not provided at the beach.
Goolawah Beach offers a more secluded, natural experience compared to Crescent Head's busier patrolled beaches. It attracts locals seeking solitude, beachcombers, and surfers looking for less crowded waves. The beach lacks commercial development and facilities, preserving its wild, untouched character—perfect for those wanting to escape crowds. The scenic coastline features interesting rock formations and headlands. Unlike the main Crescent Head surf break, Goolawah's waves vary along the beach, offering different conditions. This hidden gem rewards visitors who appreciate pristine, quiet beaches and don't mind bringing their own supplies.
